Zhengyan 正岩, "true rock", is the core area of Wuyi Shan and the most famous terroir in the tea world. Its greatness lies in the terrain, which changes every few hundred meters: a sun-exposed cliff, a shaded ravine, a bamboo grove. Each one produces a different tea, and that is exactly what this box lets you taste side by side. We visited all three areas with our group last autumn, on the autumn tour we guide through East China every year.
 
 
Shui Lian Dong 水簾洞 Rou Gui 2022. The "Water Curtain Cave", a cool, shaded gorge shaped by flowing water. This tea went through 14 months of baking and resting, and the result is soft and smooth, with the bitterness characteristic of Rou Gui converting into sweetness. This is a clear reference tea: original raw material, traditional heavy baking and flawless craftsmanship meeting in a version that checks every box. This is what Rou Gui from Zhengyan should be, and what everyone is aiming at. Not the most expensive tea and not the one with the most unique character, but the most precise and the most faithful to the original. If Hui Yuan Keng in the lao cong shui xian box has the most distinctive profile, this is the most accurate tea in the project.
 
 
Xiao Zhu Lin 小竹林 Bai Rui Xiang 2025. The "Small Bamboo Grove", grown among bamboo and broadleaf trees. Bai Rui Xiang 百瑞香 is a small, modern cultivar, the product of breeding work that isolated desirable aromas and flavors, and this is where its distinctive profile comes from: floral and fruity, with a sweet huigan 回甘 (returning sweetness). Medium-low fire.
 
 
Fo Guo Yan 佛國岩 Lao Shu Rou Gui 2025. A sun-exposed rocky cliff, and a bold, sharp, full-bodied tea. Laoshu 老樹, mature trees more than thirty years old, is a rare sight with Rou Gui, and in Zhengyan even more so: a commercial Rou Gui bush is usually replaced after around 18 years of yield. Trees that reach this age indicate a clean growing environment. They send roots deeper and wider and draw more nutrients from the soil, which translates into leaves full of character that hold up over many infusions.

All three teas were selected from our 2026 Horse Year Series box and traveled with us through the summer program in Europe: the Paris tea festival and private workshops for professional tea sommeliers.
