Wulong tea (Oolong tea) 大紅袍 Da Hong Pao, in Chinese "Big Red Robe" (da hong pao 大紅袍), returns to our stock this year with a higher-grade version compared to previous years. The tea was grown on mineral-rich, yellowish rocky soil in the ancient Xiamei town 下梅, located in the iconic Wuyi mountain range in northern Fujian Province. Young leaves were charcoal-baked twice throughout the summer of 2025, 20 hours each time, resulting in a dark appearance, a floral aroma not typically associated with Da Hong Pao, a smooth and soft texture, and a deep, complex flavor profile.
Da Hong Pao is one of tens of authentic yan cha varieties (from Mandarin: "rock tea") grown on Wuyi Shan soil, tea that has become a symbol in Chinese culture. Today, most Da Hong Pao teas on the market are commercial blends of "small" cultivars, often not originating from the true Wuyi Shan soil. This version, however, is crafted from a single cultivar Bai Rui Xiang 白瑞香 grown on its origin land.
An entry-level tea, part of the dark wulong series in the premium Wuyi yan cha category. It's a warming tea recommended for drinking during cooler seasons, from autumn to spring, and suitable for aging in its original packaging.
