This lecture is an extension of our Gongfu Cha Hosting Course and reflects the 3rd year of developing this curriculum. It offers a comprehensive framework for understanding modern gongfu cha, exploring its evolution after the Qing dynasty, from its refinement in Taiwan to its gradual revival across China. While the session strengthens the foundation of those who have already joined the hosting course, it is equally suitable for newcomers who wish to experience our approach and gain a clear introduction to contemporary tea practice.
Since last year, we have invested heavily in fieldwork and study in Chaozhou, focusing on Chaozhou gongfu cha and Dancong. Combined with the existing research from the Tang to the Qing dynasties, this lecture traces the roots of Chaozhou tea aesthetics and examines how modern China later formalized Cha Yi 茶藝 as a professional practice. By connecting historical development, regional traditions, and modern reinterpretation, you will gain a structured and grounded understanding of how gongfu cha evolved into the practice we recognize today, and how these foundations continue to influence contemporary tea culture.
This lecture suits tea lovers of all levels who wish to understand the roots of modern gongfu cha and deepen their appreciation of today’s tea culture. The lecture will be presented in a private live session on Google Meet.
